Why Us?

The Heathcote neighborhood in Scarsdale Village is proud of its small village charm and character, its attractiveness, its convenience to small shops, schools and transportation,   and most of all its community spirit.  In the face of unprecedented development plans for a  large area in Heathcote  at a major, heavily trafficked intersection, referred to as the  Heathcote Five Corners, the Heathcote Five Corners Coalition was created to help guide such proposed  future growth and development actions ---- in a coordinated and integrated manner and not through an  ad hoc process. We are a grass roots volunteer organization.  The Five Corners area is well known for its notorious traffic problems, is also an area unsafe for pedestrians, and has inadequate parking in the shopping areas.

The Coalition wants to take the opportunity to articulate a clear vision for the future and the goals for land use development at the Heathcote Five Corners:

 

OUR VISION

Encourage environmental responsiveness: traffic remediation, protect open space and the natural environment Preserve and protect the local heritage and character of the neighborhood Recognize community sensitivity: coordinate and fully integrate the planning needs of the area with public, private and government organizations. Create unique and desirable residential and commercial spaces

OUR GOALS & OBJECTIVES FOR GROWTH

Study current zoning B create a land use plan Adhere to a design review that will  protect character and style of area, compact  building, density and intensity Protect and preserve historical buildings in the area Protect the environment,  preserve open space and create additional green space Create a transportation plan: take care of traffic congestion, pedestrian safety, enhance sidewalks/walk able neighborhoods, and provide other choices in transportation such as bike paths, greenways. Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions.  Have proactive negotiations with developers to explore development options Address existing and projected housing needs Create a program for implementation for the development plan
